I have read the above document posted on the Bigbury Parish Council website and I’m surprised that Parkdean Challaborough Bay Holiday Park receives only cursory mention throughout. This is particularly notable in the sections relating to employment and tourism, given that Parkdean is probably the biggest business in Bigbury Parish, the largest employer, and by far the most significant element of the tourist industry. Even the “Challaborough Village Study” on page 91 lacks any detailed comment on the Parkdean Challaborough Holiday Park.
In reality, the Parkdean operation imposes multiple and obvious forms of pressure on local infrastructure – visitor traffic, service and delivery vehicles, caravan transport, sewage, litter, dog-fouling, light pollution, etc. For eight months of the year, Bigbury parishioners are subject to relentless noise from mowing and strimming, air conditioning equipment, outdoor “entertainment”, etc. The 450 caravans for which Parkdean is licensed, are arrayed in regimented rows with little or no screening, exerting profound visual impact on the Challaborough seafront, which is notably missing from the list of “important” parish vistas in the Plan. Yet none of this is mentioned or explicitly addressed.
While it is accepted that some of the other policies would, by default, address unbridled expansion of the Caravan Park and its activities, does the NP Steering Group not feel there is an argument for more direct and detailed consideration of its impact?
