    Dear Mr Bramble

I have seen the draft Parish Council Minutes for August 2024. I note what they say relating to my contribution at the meeting:

“The owner of Summer Winds explained that opaque glass would not be a problem although that would not deal with the other matter of reflected bright sunlight from the flat planed glass, whether opaque or not.”

Small difference though it is, I would be happier if the minutes recorded what I remember saying as shown by the red amendments below:

The owner of Summer Winds explained that opaque glass would not have been a problem if Velux had been able to supply opaque glass. As they could not, the window has been screened internally with a special Venetian blind which achieves the same effect. However, that would not deal with the other matter of reflected bright sunlight from the flat planed glass, whether opaque or not.

If, with this prompt, that also matches your recollection, I shall be grateful if you would make this small change.

    Kind regards

    David

Sadly, as everyone knows, Venetian blinds, however special, do not achieve the same privacy effect as opaque glass since one can control the opening & closing of a blind. We note that the BPC agreed with the need for opaque glass on the first planning application & in subsequent discussions because this window has direct line of sight into our main living space at Clanna Cottage. Unfortunately, the BPC’s request for such condition did not reach SHDC in time. We weren’t too worried about this & we didn’t feel the need to file an objection as we trusted our neighbours understood the importance of opaque glass to us and they had kindly agreed to make it happen. We know there are several opaquing options available which can be installed on a retrofit basis and without compromising light intake (we have a local contact who can do this readily & affordably) so we remain hopeful that our neighbours will honour their original promise to us to make the glass opaque. Failing that, it’s up to us to constantly check whether blinds are open or closed which is an unfair burden to place on us especially when it simply doesn’t need to be this way. The ability to open/close the window itself does not negate the benefit of opaque glass as it is rare that roof windows are open in our climate. Opaque glass for this particular roof window would meet our privacy concerns year-round. Thank you, John & Joni Hawkes
